Check your body mass index in kilograms or pounds, see which category it falls in, and find the healthy weight range for your height.
What your BMI tells you
Body mass index compares your weight with your height. It is the quickest way to see whether your weight is in a range linked with good health, which is why doctors use it as a first check.
It is only a first check. Two people with the same BMI can carry very different amounts of fat and muscle, so if your number surprises you, a waist measurement or a chat with a doctor will tell you more.
Changing your number
If you want to move towards the healthy range, the steady way is a small daily calorie gap. Our calorie calculator works out the right target for you, and the calorie guide shows what Nigerian dishes really cost.
Common questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For adults, the World Health Organization calls 18.5 to 24.9 a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 overweight and 30 or more obese. Under 18.5 is underweight.
Is BMI accurate?
It is a quick screen, not a diagnosis. BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so very muscular people can read as overweight, and it says nothing about where you carry weight. Waist size is a useful second check.
How is BMI calculated?
Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Someone who weighs 70 kg and is 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75), which is 22.9.
These are estimates for healthy adults, not medical advice. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, or managing a health condition, talk to a doctor or dietitian before changing how you eat.
